Diamonds and Rubies and Emeralds, Oh My

In Jewels you must line up three (or, better yet, four or five) identical jewels and eliminate them from the board. The longer you make your string, the higher your score. Each time you complete a matching string, the board is repopulated with jewels. Find another place to line up at least three jewels and do it again. Collect bonuses and rack up enough points to move on to the next level.

Strategy, Speed, or Leisure

There are four ways to play Jewels in this app: Normal, Timed, Quick, and Infinite. In the Normal setting, your game goes on until there are no more moves available. This requires you to scan the board and try to make sure you leave yourself an “out.” Line up the right jewels and you set up another move. Sometimes, though, you will find that you have only one move open to you. If you don’t find other potential moves when the board repopulates, it’s game over.

Both the Timed and Quick versions add the pressure of a (figurative) ticking clock. In these modes (Quick is shorter than Timed), you can’t study the board for long or you’ll be history. Panic may not be too strong a word for the way you feel as your time starts to run low. Beat the clock and you’ll qualify for the next level and a fresh timer. (There is a helpful hint feature if you are stumped for too long.)

Infinite is the opposite–just play for however long you choose. Select this more relaxing mode if you just want to occupy your brain without the pressure of a clock or a stuck board.

Compete with Yourself and Others

Jewels is popular around the world–how do you measure up? For all three competitive modes, the app gives offers your own local scoreboard plus the opportunity to compare yourself with the best. There are three sections in the app’s worldwide rankings: Global, Regional (your own country), and Last 24 Hours.

In addition, Jewels connects directly with Scoreloop, an online scoring and competition tracker. Here you can collect achievements and compare scores with your friends or the world at large. So jump into Jewels and join the craze.
